Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is maturing. Increasingly, it is being integrated into the mainstream of health care. This book is an excellent illustration of that. Physical therapy is an established allied health science with an integral role in many areas of medicine, ranging from assistance in managing congenital deformities to sports medicine to the aged. Its focus is on the whole person, a variety of symptoms and functions, and on healing. Therefore, it is not surprising that it has a philosophical and practical affi liation with CAM. When I was director of The Offi ce of Alternative Medicine at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) from 1995 to 1999, I found the most use of complementary medicine within the physical therapy department. As a military physician interested in integrative medicine in the Department of Defense, I found that practices such as acupuncture and manipulation were already integrated into the PM & R clinics at places like Walter Reed and the National Naval Medical Center.
