In the United States, midwifery education that
meets the standards of the American College of
Nurse-Midwives (ACNM) goes beyond the scope of
practice considered midwifery in this international
definition to include the primary health care of
newborns and of women from puberty through
senescence [2, 3]. The ACNM defines midwifery
